Speaking in a public rally on Friday, Erdoğan said Elvan, who was part of terrorist organizations and covered his face with a scarf, was hit with a tear gas canister. He justified the police action, by saying that it was impossible for the police officer, who hit him, to understand how old Elvan was. He said Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, leader of the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), is “lying as always” when he claims that Elvan was going to buy bread. He critized both parents of Elvan for blaming the prime minister for the death of their son.
He said “don’t be fooled” that these people gathered together for a “funeral of a kid.” “They particularly want to deprive our economy, peace and the settlement process,” Erdoğan said.
On Wednesday, hundreds of thousands of people bid farewell to Elvan, who was hit in the head by a police tear gas canister during the Gezi Park protests last summer and lost his battle for life on Tuesday.
