The incident took place at a rally ahead of critical local polls in the southern province of Osmaniye on Monday.
The protester appeared to be alone. He opened up his banner in the middle of the prime minister’s speech, after which those around him pulled down his sign and tried to punch him. Undercover police intervened shortly thereafter, taking the protester away from the angry party supporters.
The protester was briefly detained for questioning. TV stations and news agencies captured the event, a sign of growing intolerance in the society, on camera.
